Grimes Volunteer Support Services assists seniors, those with special needs, and/or individuals with a physical disability, FREE OF CHARGE, so they can remain in their homes.
Services GVSS Provides
- Rides to medical appointments or social engagements
- Personal assistance - watering plants, library book delivery, etc.
- Lawn mowing
- Snow removal
- Durable Medical Equipment (DME) Loans
GVSS loans crutches, walkers (several styles), single point canes, quad canes, shower chairs/benches, manual and power wheelchairs, bath scales, toilet risers, bed rails, toilet safety rails, and powerlift recliners.

Steps to Become a Client
If you choose to print the application and cannot get it back to the GVSS office, you can call to schedule a pick-up.
Step #2
Have a quick, informal meet-and-greet to establish eligibility.
Step #3
Send GVSS a service request by phone, email, or electronically.
Be sure to provide 7 days advanced notice as requests are based on volunteer availability.
Step #4
Wait for a call from the volunteer that will be assisting you!

Grimes Storehouse Food Pantry provides food, clothing and essential support to those in need in the Grimes area.

Senior Center
All seniors are invited to congregate for a meal and conversation five days a week. Meals are FREE for those 60 and older.

United
Ride United through United Way of Central Iowa is a short-term transportation solution to access essential services.
How It Works
Call 211
A 211 Community Resource Specialist will take your information to see if you qualify for a free or discounted ride. If you qualify, you will be paired with a Lyft driver.
Restrictions Include
- 30-60 minute advanced notice
- Must be a reasonable distance ($30 ride cap)
- There is a limited number of times a rider can use this service.
HIRTA
Public Transit
Grimes has partnered with HIRTA as a public transit option. Call HIRTA to schedule a ride and/or inquire about fares.
For those 60+, ask if you qualify for donation-based transportation services.
